Ok, so Thurmond's ancestor once owned Sharpton's ancestor (although, I take a lot of that genealogy stuff with a grain of salt), and we all know how Thurmond believed in segragation (except for when it came to his parent's housekeeper)*, but:

Well, the minister of the new new super-heavy funk was from South Carolina. He was also a business mogul who believed in working within the establishment, so it makes sense he would want to maintain political contacts with whomever was in power. He even backed Richard Nixon's re-election. Quite possibly because he wanted lower funky taxes on the hardest worked-for income in show business.
Word. It was really a setup for a photoshop I want to do, but didn't get time. I'll have to throw Tricky Dick in it now too.
