Keroppi is totally the coolest, but Sanrio gave him the shaft a few years ago, and quit making his merch (perhaps why you haven't heard of him). I'm sure its all part of a plot to bring him back later.
Also, note that I do not have a little sister, and am unashamed to admit that I own two hello kitty t-shirts, because she is awesome.
